What are the benefits of strength training?
Strength training is essential because research studies show that bone density improves with a regular strength training routine. This is especially helpful for older adults who naturally lose bone density and muscle mass as they age. A regular and healthy strength training routine would include 30 - 55 minutes of training up to 3 days a week, depending on a person's age and fitness level. A frequent concern of women is that strength training will make them bulk up. This is not true. A person's size depends upon the amount of calories they consume and the level of hormones (testosterone) naturally occurring in their body. Obesity and other weight issues can be caused by high levels of cortisol, a result of adrenal gland overload. Inflammation from food allergies can also be a cause of weight gain. Muscle hypertrophy or what most people refer to as "the definition or cuts" in a muscle's appearance have to do with specific routines and periodization that you can learn with the help of a qualified trainer. Strength training is needed to compliment any regular cardio workout ( 30 - 50 minutes a day 3-4 days a week) because the more lean muscle mass you have, the more calories your body can burn at rest. Cardiovascular conditioning is needed to lower your resting heart rate and help release stress hormones. It will also raise your metabolism when done as instructed by your trainer. What is flexibility training and why is it important? Flexibility is one of the most overlooked and most needed modalities in the health industry. Flexibility is the ability of a muscle to go through its full range of motion without restrictions. Without proper flexibility, a muscle will not function properly. This is how most people injure themselves while weight training. If a person has poor flexibility a trainer should first prescribe corrective exercises and flexibility training before progressing a client to weight bearing exercises. The reason for this is because a muscle that has limited or no range of motion, will recruit secondary muscles to do its primary function. This causes misalignment which causes pain. Pain is a warning that something isn’t right. If a person strength trains improperly, this will result in further injury. To summarize the point of this balance, I think of building a healthily structured body as like building a house. The flexibility training and corrective exercises are the foundation. Cardiovascular training is the walls, and finally, the building of lean, good looking muscle is the pretty pictures and knick knacks. You don’t put up the pictures and the knick knacks before you have the foundation and the walls!
What are the benefits of hiring a personal trainer?
Sometimes we don’t know what we don’t know, and this stops us from going to the next level. It stops us from asking for help from professionals. We try to do it ourselves and save time or money or whatever we can think of. Or we don’t know what this “expert” can do for us so we don’t seek them out.
I remember needing help managing my finances. I got books and tapes and learned as much as I could about how to grow and save my money. I knew more than I knew before I read those books and took those classes, but I still knew I didn’t know as much as the experts. I knew as much as I could at that time, and decided I would get expert help as well. I hired a financial planner to help me while I saved and planned. Many of you have probably done the same.
Most likely, you wouldn’t go to trial without a lawyer, so why try to exercise without the expert help of a personal trainer? You could waste months doing the wrong types of exercises for your goal and even hurt yourself, which could set you back even further from that goal.
Sometimes we get so down on ourselves because we have tried everything we know to lose weight or get fit and it never works. If you hire me, I will believe in you when you don’t. Sometimes we stop believing in ourselves. You need a personal trainer who cares to motivate you past that perception. Once you begin to see results, you believe in yourself. Then you can create a vision to live into. Where the mind goes the body will follow. If you can create a vision of yourself in the future in your mind, your body will eventually catch up to that vision, and it becomes your reality.
I know that you can succeed if you follow my guidance. I have seen many people achieve their dreams by following a carefully executed plan of action. Life will inevitably get in the way of your goals and dreams, but that is when you find out what you are truly made of. Life is one big justification to quit. Once you get that, and make a commitment to change, you will either give into your excuses or you will live up to your commitment. I will be that health and fitness professional that guides you to your physical best.
Your body is a reflection of your mind. At any age, one can be balanced in mind, body and sprit. The body changes as we age and so do our interests. It is important to consider that what you thought was fun at 30 years old, may not feel the same at 50 years old. That doesn’t mean that you should quit exercising. It may mean changing and adapting to your body’s new exercise needs. Together, we will find exercises that work with your body to keep you healthy and fit at any age.
Clients who work with me find their true motivation, and discover activities that become lifetime enjoyments.
